As we celebrate Black History Month, it's important to recognize the achievements and contributions of African Americans in all fields, including fashion. One such figure is Ann Cole Lowe, a pioneering fashion designer who broke barriers in a largely white-dominated industry.
Born in Clayton, Alabama in 1898, Ann grew up in a family of seamstresses and learned to sew at a young age. She went on to study at the Academy of Practical Design in New York City and honed her skills as a couture seamstress, creating one-of-a-kind garments for wealthy clients.
Ann faced segregation during her studies at S.T. Taylor Design School in New York City. Despite the challenges, she excelled and graduated after only half a year. She opened her own successful dress salon in Tampa, Florida and later returned to New York City after saving $20,000 of her earnings.
She worked on commission for prestigious stores such as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue during the 1950s and 1960s. She also designed the dress for Olivia de Havilland's Academy Award acceptance, though it was credited under the name Sonia Rosenberg.

She was known for her unique designs, which incorporated her southern roots and combined traditional techniques with modern elements. Her elegant and sophisticated gowns were sought after by socialites, politicians, and even first ladies, such as Jacqueline Kennedy.
