Swing for the fences

Bianca Smith made history in 2021 when she became the first Black woman to be hired as a coach in professional baseball. Her appointment as a minor league coach for the Boston Red Sox was a landmark moment for both women and black women in the sport.

Smith was a standout athlete in her own right, playing softball at Dartmouth College and later serving as an assistant coach for the university's softball team. She then earned a law degree from Case Western Reserve University and worked as a legal counsel for the Cincinnati Reds.

However, Smith's passion for sports never waned, and she pursued a career in coaching. After working as an assistant coach at Carroll University and the University of Dallas, she landed the historic role with the Red Sox.

Smith's hiring is particularly significant given the lack of diversity in baseball coaching. Despite being a sport with a significant Black player population, there are few Black coaches at any level of professional baseball. Women, especially black women, are even more underrepresented in the coaching ranks.

Smith's success serves as an inspiration to other women and black women who are pursuing careers in sports. Her groundbreaking achievement proves that with hard work and dedication, anyone can break down barriers and make history.

As we celebrate Black History Month, it's important to recognize those like Bianca Smith, whose determination and perseverance have helped pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future in sports. Her impact will be felt for generations to come
