Today as we continue of Black History Month celebration, we’re excited to honor John Amos, an actor whose powerful performances and dedication to authentic storytelling have left an unforgettable mark on television, film, and American culture. Known for his iconic roles in Good Times, Roots, and Coming to America, John Amos brought depth, strength, and integrity to every character he portrayed, becoming a symbol of resilience and pride in the African American community.
Growing Up in New Jersey
Born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, John Amos was raised in a working-class family that instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance. Before stepping into the world of acting, he pursued a career in athletics. He attended Colorado State University on a football scholarship and later played professional football, including a stint with the Denver Broncos.
Passion: Film and Television
John Amos's passion for storytelling and performance eventually led him to the stage. Amos studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he honed the skills that would later make him a household name.
He's best known for his role as James Evans Sr. on the groundbreaking sitcom Good Times, where he portrayed a strong, hardworking father navigating the challenges of raising a family in Chicago's South Side. His portrayal of James Evans was a departure from the stereotypical depictions of Black fathers on television, offering viewers a character filled with dignity, strength, and love.


John Amos’s impact didn’t stop there. His role as Kunta Kinte in the acclaimed miniseries Roots was a defining moment in American television history. Roots history about slavery while entering into the national conversation. John Amos’s powerful performance resonated with audiences around the world.
In addition to his dramatic roles, John Amos showed his comedic chops in films like Coming to America, where he played Cleo McDowell, the proud owner of McDowell’s fast-food restaurant. His versatility as an actor allowed him to move seamlessly between genres, making him one of the most respected figures in Hollywood.
